As part of the initiative, you have access to:
Up to $5,000 total to help you make energy efficiency retrofits to your home
Up to $600 for a home evaluation and expert advice so you can begin to plan your retrofits
Attic / Ceiling Insulation
Eligibility criteria for reimbursement:
- Insulate a minimum of 20% of the total area of your attic or ceiling.
- You must increase the insulation value (R-value).
- Add insulation in the same location (e.g., attic floor vs. attic ceiling) as the insulation present at the time of the pre-retrofit evaluation.
Important:
- The grant amounts reflect a situation where 100% of the ceiling area is one roof type. Your home may have a combination of ceiling types.
- The total grant for any combination of attic, cathedral ceiling and flat roof insulation cannot exceed $1,800.
- The total amount of your reimbursement will be calculated based on the total percentage of your attic that you choose to insulate. For example, if you insulate 80% of your attic you would qualify for 80% of the amount listed below.
Select below the current level of insulation in your home at the time of the pre-evaluation: | Grant amounts (by the level of additional insulation added to your home) |
---|
If you achieve a total minimum insulation value of (R-50) for your attic | If you achieve a total minimum insulation value of (R-28) for your flat roof and/or cathedral ceiling | If you insulate your uninsulated flat roof or cathedral ceiling to increase its insulation value by a minimum of (R-20) |
---|
No insulation | N/A | N/A | $600 |
(R-12) and less | $1,800 | $600 | $600 |
Greater than (R-12) and up to (R-25) | $600 | $250 | N/A |
Greater than (R-25) and (R-35) | $250 | N/A | N/A |
Air-sealing
Making improvements to reduce the air from leaving your house is the single most important retrofit to improve energy efficiency, and it should be considered first in any retrofit strategy. Your Renovation Upgrade Report (RUR) will provide you with a target to improve the air-tightness of your home. The lower the value you achieve; the more favorable the grant amount. Typically, these levels would be achieved with the assistance of an air-sealing professional.
Perform professional air sealing to improve the air-tightness of your home.
Options: | Grant Amounts |
---|
Meet the target in your RUR | $550 |
Obtain a larger Grant: |
---|
If you reach 10% better than the target in your report (i.e. 0.9 x target valueFootnote1) | $810 |
If you reach 20% better than the target in your report (i.e. 0.8 x target valueFootnote1) | $1,000 |
Basement / Foundation Insulation
Did you know that basements can account for about 20% of a home’s total heat loss?
Eligibility criteria for reimbursement:
- Insulate a minimum of 20% of the wall area of the foundation, including basement and crawlspace walls.
Important: - You can combine the grants shown below: i.e. adding insulation to the basement header and wall insulation.
- For a semi- detached or end unit row house, you will not qualify for the full amount of the grant – the maximum you would be eligible for is 75% of the listed amounts.
- For a middle unit row house, the maximum grant you would qualify for is 50% of the listed amounts.
- There are no grants available for insulation of walls between individual units.
- When both a basement and crawlspace are present, all applicable grants are pro-rated to a maximum of $1,500 based on the total wall area and the additional insulation.
Seal and insulate at least: | Grant amount |
---|
80% of your entire basement header area to increase its insulation value by a minimum of (R-20) | $240 |
50% of your entire basement slab by a minimum of (R-3.5) | $400 |
Minimum additional wall insulation | Grant Amounts (by the level of additional insulation added to your home) |
---|
Percent area that you choose to insulate | Add insulation value of RSI 1.76 (R-10) to (R-22) | Add insulation greater than (R-22) |
---|
20% | $210 | $300 |
100% | $1,050 | $1,500 |
Crawlspace
Did you know that a crawlspace can be insulated in two ways: the walls of the crawlspace can be insulated on the inside or the outside, resulting in a heated area. The house floor above it can also be insulated.
Eligibility criteria for reimbursement:
- Add insulation in the crawlspace wall and header, or ceiling.
- Insulate the entire area noted in the Recommended Upgrade Report.
- If you are also insulating your basement, the maximum you can receive for insulating both areas is $1500.
Important:
- If you live in a semi- detached or end unit row house, you will not qualify for the full amount of the grant – the maximum you would be eligible for is 75% of the listed amounts.
- If you live in a middle unit row house, the maximum grant you would qualify for is 50% of the listed amounts.
Grant Amounts (by the level of additional insulation added to your home) |
---|
Add insulation value of (R-10) to (R-22) | Add insulation value greater than (R-22) | Add insulation value greater than (R-24) |
---|
Insulate 100% of the crawlspace’s total exterior wall area, including the header area. | $1,040 | $1,300 | N/A |
---|
Insulate 100% of the crawlspace ceiling (preferably with minimum continuous insulation) | N/A | N/A | $800 |

- demonstrate the property is your primary residence through either a drivers licence or government issued ID (with address), or utility bill
Eligible property types:
- Single and semi-detached houses
- Row housing
- Townhomes
- All-season cottages
- Mobile homes on a permanent foundation
- Permanently-moored floating homes
- Mixed use buildings (residential portion only)
- Small multi-unit residential building (three storeys or less with a footprint of 600m2 or less)
Requirements for the initiative
You must:
- complete a pre- and post-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation
- complete at least one retrofit that is both eligible and recommended by your energy advisor in their report. Only homeowners who conduct at least one retrofit will be reimbursed.
- provide and keep copies of all of your documents until March 31, 2028.
What is eligible for reimbursement?
Once you have completed your retrofits, you can seek reimbursement for:
- up to $5,000 total for the implementation of eligible retrofits done after December 1, 2020.
- up to $600 for the cost of your pre- and post-retrofit EnerGuide evaluations. You will not be reimbursed for the pre-retrofit evaluation unless you continue through the full Greener Homes Grant process.
Step 1: Learn about the initiative
Check that you meet all the eligibility criteria for the grant, review the requirements, and learn more about the process
Step 2: Register and book your pre-retrofit evaluation
To participate, you must register online on the Greener Homes Grant portal. Up to 700,000 grants will be available.
Your pre-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation is the next step in improving the energy efficiency of your home. This evaluation is required before you undertake your retrofits and will be performed by an NRCan registered energy advisor
Step 3: Plan, document and complete your home retrofits
After you receive the EnerGuide evaluation in the portal from your energy advisor, you may review the recommendations for your home retrofits and decide which retrofits work best for your budget and renovation plans.
You will need to complete at least one retrofit that is both eligible and recommended by your energy advisor. You can find your home’s recommendations in your Renovations Upgrade Report and on the online portal
Step 4: Book your post-retrofit evaluation and apply for reimbursement
Once you have completed your home retrofits, you can start the reimbursement process. To be reimbursed, you need to book your post-retrofit evaluation and submit all your required documents online or by mail.
Once your evaluation is complete, a new EnerGuide label and a post-evaluation report will show you how much more energy-efficient your home has become.
Step 5: Receive your reimbursement
Before your reimbursement is finalized, you will need to confirm your grant total in the portal. This is the last step before you receive your cheque.
Logik Roofing & Insulation is excited to announce we are an approved contractor in Oshawa for the new Canada Greener Homes Grant program. This program helps Canadians make energy-efficient improvements to their homes to help save energy.
When you save energy, you save money. Homes that participate in this program will be more comfortable as indoor air temperatures will be easier to maintain since the heating and cooling system will need to run less often.
What type of grants are available?
There will be up to 700,000 grants available with rebates of up to $5,000 for homeowners who make energy-efficient retrofits to their homes, like topping up their attic insulation. A rebate of up to $600 is available for EnerGuide evaluations to help homeowners determine what retrofits would benefit their homes the most and start planning those retrofits.
Why top up the attic insulation?
The Canada Greener Homes Grant provides rebates to help homeowners top up their attic insulation. The more insulation in the attic, the slower the rate of heat loss, which results in improved energy efficiency.
Heat loss resistance is measured using an R-value. The higher the R-value, the better the heat loss resistance. Current building codes, as of 2021, require attics to have an R-value of R60 in attic insulation.
An attic insulation top-up is one of the easiest retrofits to make since the attic in most homes is easily accessible. With the grants, you can save on making energy improvements to your home.
What are the eligibility requirements?
You must insulate a minimum of 20% of the total areas of the attic while increasing the R-value. The new insulation must be added in the same locations as the existing insulation. The grant program will reimburse you up to $1,800 for topping up the attic insulation.
The rebate can vary based on the current R-value in the attic and the R-value after the top-up.
Can grants be combined?
Yes, the Canada Greener Homes Grant program allows you to combine grants for other energy-efficient home improvements. You can receive a rebate as well based on the type of improvements made.
How do I get started?
- Step 1: Learn more about the grant programs. Review that you meet eligibility requirements and learn more about the process.
- Step 2: Register and book your pre-retrofit evaluation. To participate in the program, you must register through the Greener Homes Grant program portal.
- Step 3: Decide what improvements you want to make to your home. Review your EnerGuide evaluation to decide what retrofits work best for your budget and home.
- Step 4: Complete your home retrofits with an authorized contractor. You will need to complete at least one retrofit through an authorized contractor to quality for a rebate.
- Step 5: Book your post-retrofit evaluation to apply for your rebates. After the retrofits are completed, you need to book a post-retrofit evaluation to confirm the work completed.
